Pilates

All classes are taught by Kate Sellars a fully qualified and insured Level 4 Pilates teacher, member of the Body Control Pilates Association and qualified Personal Trainer. Kate specialises in lower back pain and is also a member of BackCare, the organisation and charity.  Kate has been involved with Pilates for 15 years after discovering spinal injuries after a previous career in horseracing and has now been teaching for 13 years.

As a Body Control teacher, Kate has completed an extensive course with over 100 hours of theory, a practical examination and a written paper exam plus over 70 hours of supervised teaching with other senior teachers.  Level 4 is the highest level for any exercise instructor within the REPs membership (Register of Exercise Professionals).

The Body Control Pilates Association (BCPA) is Europe’s foremost professional Pilates organisation, being the membership body for qualified Body Control Pilates teachers.  It was established in February 1997 and currently has over a thousand teaching members in the UK and abroad. It is a non-profit making body governed by a Council.  BCPA is a ‘not for profit’ organisation that exists to safeguard the standards and quality of Body Control Pilates teaching, as well as to provide a unique support network for the Body Control Pilates teachers worldwide.  Body Control Pilates is remarkably effective and is medically approved.  It is of an holistic nature, being based upon a well-constructed philosophical foundation.

What do classes involve? – Central to the Body Control Method is ‘awareness of your own body’ and each and every exercise is built around its eight basic principles:

Relaxation, co-ordination, alignment, stamina, concentration, centring, breathing and flowing movement

Classes are 1 hour duration and cost £88 for a block of 8 sessions.  All equipment is provided just wear comfortable clothes. Private sessions are also available on request.

Pilates works for everyone ! – Pilates can work for everyone, regardless of fitness level! Exercises can be mat or machine based, but mat-work exercises have a great attraction in that they need no special equipment, and are particularly safe for those with back problems (and don’t forget that 95% of the UK population has, or has had, backache). Its consistent success rate in solving such problems has brought it to the attention of osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists and homeopathic doctors. In fact, many osteopaths and physiotherapists are now setting up Pilates studios as part of their practices. So if you want to reduce pain and increase mobility and flexibility give it a try !
